  1. Today, the Honourable Mark Holland, Canada’s Minister of Health and the Honourable Tracy-Anne McPhee, Minister of Health and Social Services of the Yukon, announced three agreements to invest a total amount of nearly $86 million to improve health care access and services in the Yukon.
  2. A strong Yukon economy needs vibrant and growing community businesses. Providing tailored support for entrepreneurs and business development helps small businesses innovate, grow and thrive.
  3. Liard First Nation, Ross River Dena Council, and the White River First Nation have constructed 33 new homes and refurbished an additional four homes with funding from Indigenous Services Canada.

  5. Across Canada, Canadians are facing labour shortages and the demand for qualified workers continues to grow. Long wait times and difficulty finding a family physician are far too common for people across the country. That is why the Government of Canada is investing to speed up accreditation for internationally educated health professionals (IEHPs).

The Canada Games Centre will be able to better serve 735,000 people a year through upgraded ventilation systems after a federal investment of more than $4.5 million through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The City of Whitehorse is also contributing $2,475,000 to the project.

  8. Whitehorse, Yukon, January 10, 2024 — Active transportation projects will provide healthy and convenient travel options in Whitehorse and Watson Lake, after a combined investment of more than $14 million from the governments of Canada and Yukon and communities.
  9. The federal government is investing $10,543,440 through the Active Transportation Fund to support four active transportation projects in Whitehorse and Watson Lake.
  10. Four participants will contribute their innovative solutions to improving food security across the territories.
  11. The Northern Food Innovation Challenge (NFIC) is an innovative approach to addressing socio-economic challenges in Canada’s North and Arctic, undertaken as part of CanNor’s Northern Isolated Community Initiatives (NICI) fund.

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting the local organizations that support our seniors by empowering them and contributing to their health and well-being.
  18. The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal grants and contributions program that funds projects that empower seniors in their communities and contributes to improving seniors’ health and well-being.
  19. On behalf of Seamus O’Regan Jr., Minister for Seniors, Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, will announce investments through the New Horizons for Seniors Program to fund community-based projects improving seniors’ health and well-being in the Yukon.
  20. Today, Dr. Brendan Hanley, Member of Parliament for Yukon; Jeanie McLean, Deputy Premier, Minister of Education and Minister responsible for the Women and Gender Equity Directorate; and His Worship Christopher Irvin, Mayor of the Town of Watson Lake, announced a joint investment of more than $16 million to support the planning and construction of water, sewer and road upgrades in Watson Lake.
  21. Today, the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, PrairiesCan and CanNor, and Brendan Hanley, Member of Parliament for the Yukon, announced an investment of $38,500 to support the expansion of the 12 Days of Christmas Fireweed Community Market. Along with support from the non-profit organization, the Yukon Government and vendors, this represents a $184,000 investment over two years in the Christmas market.
  22. The history, culture and traditions of Indigenous communities are an integral part of Canadian society and our national economy. This is especially true in the Yukon, and the Government of Canada is continuing to build partnerships with Indigenous businesses and communities to create more economic opportunities, including supporting the Indigenous tourism and culture sectors.

  26. Today, Dr. Brendan Hanley, Member of Parliament for Yukon and Richard Mostyn, Minister of Community Services, announced a joint investment of more than $9.3 million to make the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre more energy efficient and upgrade its ventilation system.

  28. The Government of Canada is continuing to make important investments to ensure a strong economy in communities across the North. Traditionally underserved businesses, particularly those that are women-owned or Indigenous-owned, are an important pillar to regional economic growth, providing a wide spectrum of important goods and services to their communities.
  29. Today, the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon are taking the next step by announcing an agreement in principle for a shared plan that will invest $380 million in federal funding over 10 years in Yukon, including $73 million for a new bilateral agreement focusing on shared health priorities. This investment also includes $171 million in CHT growth since 2022-2023, a guaranteed 5 per cent growth to the CHT for the next five years (expected additional value of $20 million over 10 years), and $2 million through an immediate one-time CHT top-up to address urgent needs, especially in pediatric hospitals and emergency rooms, and long wait times for surgeries.

  32. The Alaska Highway divides Whitehorse and creates a barrier to accessing services, community recreational facilities, schools and impacts the movements of residents of all ages. This investment will support an active transportation feasibility study undertaken by the Cycling Association of Yukon and supported by Takhini residents, the Hillcrest Community Association, and the Whitehorse Urban Cycling Coalition

  34. The Government of Yukon believes that the agriculture sector is vital to the territory. Today, the Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources John Streicker launched the Yukon’s new agricultural funding program under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). The program follows the signing of the Canada-Yukon Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership bilateral agreement on April 4, 2023 with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.
  35. The Government of Canada is continuing to support businesses and organizations that contribute to a strong and sustainable economy across the North and Arctic.
  36. The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls highlighted the underlying systemic causes of ongoing violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. The COVID-19 pandemic also created unprecedented challenges for victims and survivors seeking help and the frontline organizations that support them.
  37. The Government of Canada is investing in jobs, growth and an economy that works for everyone. These investments, combined with the resilience of Canadians, is crucial to building a sustainable and prosperous country for future generations. In the Yukon, these efforts are exemplified by the many businesses and organizations that are leading initiatives in their communities that inspire pride, purpose and opportunity.

To help, the Government of Canada is making strategic investments to offset the high costs of labour, transportation, and socio-economic challenges that impact the ability of Northerners and Indigenous peoples to grow, harvest and buy food.
  39. Today, the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, PrairiesCan and CanNor, announced an investment of more than $1.1 million to support five community infrastructure projects across the Yukon.

  44. Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) and the Canadian Museum of Nature have signed a Letter of Agreement to continue collaborating on research and monitoring in the North and Arctic to further understand rapidly changing northern ecosystems.
  45. Polar Knowledge Canada was proud to present the 2022 Northern Science Award to Lucassie Arragutainaq, of Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, at the ArcticNet Annual Scientific Meeting.
  46. Brendan Hanley, Member of Parliament for Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources, announced $3.5 million in support for the Yukon First Nations Wildfire project for training 10 instructors and 120 wildland firefighters under the Indigenous Firefighter and Multi-Hazard Training Initiative. This pilot project will support the Yukon First Nations Wildfire’s vision to incorporate traditional Indigenous knowledge in wildland firefighting and help to inform the Wildfire Training Program.
  47. WHITEHORSE, YT - Polar Knowledge Canada is opening a call for proposals that will support Yukon-based projects. Successful projects will advance knowledge on the call’s strategic theme: climate change impacts and adaptation strategies in the Yukon.
  48. The Government of Canada is working to reduce social and economic inequities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities by making immediate and long-term investments to help close critical infrastructure gaps.
  49. Today, as part of Small Business Week 2022, the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, Minister for PrairiesCan and Minister for CanNor, announced an investment of nearly $200,000 to support the continued growth and expansion of two women-owned Yukon small businesses.
  50. Today, Dr. Brendan Hanley, Member of Parliament for Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities; the Honourable Jeanie McLean, Yukon’s Minister of Education; and the Honourable Nils Clarke, Yukon’s Minister of Highways and Public Works, announced preliminary joint funding of $22.5 million for the construction of a new school in Burwash Landing. The final value of the contract to build the school will not be determined until the procurement phase of the project concludes.
